About Hot Seat Heaters

Joseph Crawley began his stove odyssey building rocket stoves for cooking. He moved on to many experiments with wood burning mass heaters variations. Along the way he has acquired welding and masonry skills. After four rebuilds of the stove in his house, he is zeroing in on the perfect design with a 5th rebuild happening fall of 2018.

After studying the various benefits and flaws in rocket mass heaters, Joseph came across the Batch Box Rocket heater: a near perfect hybrid of rocket technology and versatile masonry heaters that allow for warm benches, bake ovens, and can be made of nearly any masonry.

A recent invention of his own devising allowed the batch rocket bake oven to become hotter and far more efficient than BBR heaters tend toward.

Caleb Smith is the son of a mason and grew up in working with masonry, laying brick, and working with different mortars.

Caleb leads Hot Seat in areas involving brick and mortar work as well as advising which mortars to use for different aspects of a heater. He loves using natural, non-cement mortar wherever possible. Caleb's knowledge and skill in building with masonry is a major asset when custom building to fit the customer's needs.

Caleb also studies Chinese medicine and dedicates similar focus and care to building heaters as he would a patient.
